Bad Tattoo - HYYTS (Warner Music)

Visuals by Jordan MacRae, music by Jordan MacRae and Ross Woodhead, recorded in Glasgow in 2021.

These images were crafted by distorting video signals using a technique called video bending, the source footage for this film come from an experiment in 2019 placing an iPhone underwater on Scotland’s west coast for one hour. The results have been edited into a series of loops which have then been processed by real time interaction with analogue video gear that “bends” the video signal to distort and pull apart the source material to generate completely new images, leaving hints or the original footage available to the eye. This process has taken years to arrive at a final product, after conducting many tests to establish the most successful ways to generate the colours and textures I have seen in my head for a long time. The workflow for a project like this is complicated, please see diagram below for the signal chain I set up to achieve this look. It was created with the intention of being installed in a gallery space, the film on a loop with the projector spraying the images onto a piece of opaque material hung from the gallery ceiling. The material would be gently moved by a fan underneath the projector and behind the sheet of gauze. There are four speakers in the room, each in a corner, providing a quadraphonic experience to those in the room as the ambient music bounces around the four speakers.

The Light Is Clear In My Eyes (2016), directed and shot by Jordan MacRae

My first film made under strict limitation. For this project the stipulation is that I would make the film entirely using only one 50ft cartridge of Super 8 film. This means everything that was shot on the roll would be in the film. No editing. No second takes.

The footage shot on the single roll would be synchronised separately, by an outside party, to the sound, recorded in collaboration with close friend and contributor Patrick Collins, a Glasgow based sound designer and musician. Patrick and I recorded the voice of Nima Sene, the film’s only actor, and Patrick produced a haunting soundtrack to supplement a deeply emotional poem written by Gordon Collins.

Working with limitation is one of my favourite ways to create and even as one of my earliest films, I still see value in this work today. Super 8 is a medium I continue to work with and this workflow, despite the pressure and challenges, brought out the best in our team. (Full credits in Vimeo description.)
